Choosing the Right Deck for Your Home

When deciding to add a deck to your home there are a lot of factors to consider. From weather elements to the design of the deck itself, you will want to make sure you understand what types of decks are available and ultimately what deck is best for your home. Today, Landau Real Estate discusses the different types of decks and how you should choose the right deck for your home.

Composite Deck
Composite lumber is a material that is a mixture of wood fiber, plastic, and some type of binding agent. Composite decking will keep the same look and color for longer without the need for ongoing maintenance, so if you would like a hassle-free deck this is a good choice.

Pressure Treated Wood Deck
Pressure-treated wood is typically Southern Yellow Pine that has been chemically treated to increase rot resistance and prevent damage from insects. Pressure-treated wood is the most cost-effective option on the market (but may not be for long as lumber continues to increase).

Metal Deck
A metal deck is typically a premium deck option as it entails higher material cost and special skill sets to build them. Metal decks are extremely durable and low maintenance options. They are also a very popular option in multi-unit buildings throughout Chicago.

Cedar Deck
It’s a durable wood that is naturally resistant to rot and bugs and resists moisture, so it tends to last longer, needs less maintenance, and doesn’t warp as much. Cedar is typically a better-looking wood solution, with strong color tones and consistency that can be sanded, stained, and treated for a beautiful finish. You may be surprised to find out that cedar is actually more environmentally superior to synthetic products. Although cedar decking isn’t the least expensive material, it is an affordable wood, given its many advantages.
